Freedom Trip 2024

This year, just like every year, Dr. Sharad, Balkrishan, and I embarked on a freedom trip to Madhya Pradesh. Our main goal was to discover hidden gems in this beautiful state.

I started my journey solo by car from Ghaziabad on January 26th, heading towards Prayagraj. After spending two days there, the three of us set off to explore MP. Originally, I had planned to take a train to my hometown, but due to heavy fog causing delays, I decided to drive instead. At first, I wasn’t sure if we would be able to go on the trip this year as my dad was unwell. However, he recovered just in time, allowing us to proceed with our adventure.

Excluding the first and last day of our trip, we spent a total of nine days traveling and visiting eight different destinations. These included Shivpuri, Ujjain, Burhanpur, Sanchi, Gyaraspur, Rewa, and Prayagraj. On the first day, I traveled from Ghaziabad to Prayagraj, and on the final day, we made our way back. I fell sick between Ujjain and Burhanpur, so there is no photos of these 2 destinations. I’ve attached a few photos taken from both my mobile phone and DSLR camera during our journey. I hope you enjoy them!

Scary stuff

While our road trip to Bandhavgarh, we have stopped on the way to the tiger reserve and took a few photos of deers roaming around, then a few photos of each other, spent like 20 mins there out in open.

A deer crossing the road

A tour guide from a passing-by car scolded us and moved without stopping, we could not understand what was wrong, as we were not inside the tiger reserve. A few days later, a friend went to Bandhavgarh tiger reserve and capture this video of around the same place where we were roaming in open. Scary stuff !!!

Posting a few photos here which will be only posted on WordPress, not posting these anywhere 😀

I found it very challenging to shoot with my 70-300 mm handheld, this is a cheap lens that adds a lot of noise even at ISO 400, most of the time I shoot at ISO 100 but low light conditions never gives satisfactory results. Photographing in the tiger reserve in the early winter morning, on dirt roads and fog, when both I and the tiger were moving and the camera was hand held has confirmed that I need to get L telephoto lenses for wildlife and avian photography. 70-300 mm is just not good enough.

Most of the photos I am posting here are taken using 70-300 mm, so bear with me on the sharpness of those.

Fire

I am thinking to change the format of how I post a blog entry, I have noticed dumping all photos of trips without details is not gaining enough attention. So now I am thinking to post my blog entries more frequently but with just 1 photo with some details or some quotes to reflect what I wish to convey using that photos. In fact, this is the format of posting I am following in my Flickr, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts and getting the better attention of viewers. Please follow me on my social media handle it’s the same for every platform which is @pawan269.

For this blog post, I am posting a year-old photo of a small roadside restaurant somewhere around Rewa, MP, India. It was a very cold winter night in January 2021 and we were returning from our MP trip to Prayagraj.

Fire gives warmth, comfort, gives a feeling that something lively is happening around. To keep yourself alive, keep the fire inside you ablaze.

Ancient water purification

Relying mainly on rainwater for drinking, the people of Mandu have developed a very advanced water cleaning mechanism in the 15th century.
Water collected in Baolies was flown first in a small tank filled with limestone, then it passes through various small tanks filled with different materials like coal, fine sand, coarse sand, gravel, herbs, etc and then finally gets collected in a small solid tank, from where it then gets distributed to royalties for drinking.

For me, it’s important to live a happy life with happy people rather than acquiring all the wealth in this world, I must not regret at the end that I did not live the life.

Freedom Trip 2021

It’s like hormonal change starts to happen at the beginning of every winter, which triggers a natural urge to go on a road trip. This road trip is only limited to Madhya Pradesh so far. This year, due to the board exams of our kids, it was near impossible to maintain that tradition which we were following for the last 11 years. Thanks to the delays caused by lockdown exams were postponed and our trip plan switched on.

We have decided to touch an ancient but important city Mandu in MP and visit the nearby holy city of Ujjain. As it was a long trip from Allahabad, we took a halt at Vidisha while going and Sagar while returning back.

Our route was

Prayag (Allahabad) -> Vidisha -> Mandu -> Indore -> Ujjain -> Sagar -> Prayag  (Allahabad) (Dates 24-29 Jan 2021)

Due to fog on plains, we have decided to remain in Vindyachal while going and returning back, else we could have taken the national highway.

State of MP is known for it's low population density and this is what fascinates travellers. One can travel miles without seeing anyone or been seen, there is nothing other than nature around. Mostly based on Vindhyachal plateau and have very rocky terrain. Not much suitable for growing crops, so mainly cattle farming being done here. If you are sick of chaos around you this is the place where you want to be. It has it's own magic in every season.

Vindyachal range is a plateau, which predates the even Himalayas by a huge margin. Fossils of many prehistoric bacteria and even dinosaurs are found on this.

Mandu has a turbulent history, especially between 1300-1500. This is reflected in its architecture as well. Same buildings that were built with Hindu architecture been modified many times over the years. One needs to look closely to figure out layers of history in these buildings.

Yearly ritual – part 3

Managing, organizing and planning, this is what I do the entire year whatever I do, but for our yearly ritual I do not do this at all. Unplanned travel creates a lot of breathing space and gives me time to enjoy the trip rather than worrying about hotel booking  or fooding.

We stayed in a good hotel at Shahdol on first night of this trip and after dinning Dr Sharad came up with idea of Visiting holy city of Amarkantak (Amakantak is know for origin of river Narmada) before reaching Kanha our final destination. As nothing was planned and there was no intention to create any plan, we all agreed . Dr Sharad got body massage done and brother BK got my car washed, we took all luxuries before hitting the road at 11:00 AM next morning. Trust me I was not worried about reaching Kanha before evening.
